BiographyGad Beck (1923-2012) was an anti-Nazi fighter, member of the resistance and the last known gay survivor of the Holocaust.
His father was Jewish and Austrian mother, was considered a mongrel by the Nazi authorities a Mischling. With only 18 years he lived the most important experience of his life: the enormous effort made to rescue his boyfriend from a concentration camp, the Jewish Manfred Lewin. Despite their efforts, Lewin refused to leave his family, so he was transferred to Auschwitz, where he died. He was betrayed by a Jewish Gestapo spy and sent to a transit camp. Years later he was released, which led him to write his autobiography: An Underground Life: Memoirs of a Gay Jew in Nazi Berlin, published in 2000. Gad Beck died on June 14, 2012 in Berlin. |
